You’re Invited!

Spread the word! Congregational leaders working to create thriving churches for God’s mission are invited to attend this one-day event with a full slate of workshops geared at building up skills for effective congregational ministry.

This event is for the whole vestry, office staff, educators, volunteers, clergy, and everyone in between. We will offer workshops aimed at equipping leaders with the tools, resources, and connections for the building of thriving churches living out God’s mission. We’ll cover topics such as leadership, formation, parish management, evangelism, and more.

And this part is great too – it’s FREE!

The Details:

Leadership Day will take place on Saturday, February 24th from 10-4pm at St. John’s, Midland. Doors will open at 9:30am. There is no cost to attend.

Lunch will be provided. A free will donation will be available to help us cover the cost of lunch.

 

The Workshops:

Deepening Your Faith

Presenter: The Rt. Rev. Cate Waynick, Provisional Bishop

Dig a little deeper. In this workshop, Bishop Cate will invite participants to turn off and tune out in order to deepen our own spirituality. We’ll consider how regular practice and understanding of our basic texts (Bible, Prayer Book) can move us (and our congregations) into closer relationship with Christ.

Grant Writing for Congregations

Presenter: Chuk Kleber,
St. John’s Episcopal Church Endowment Committee

Grants often assist churches in paying for transformational ministry. This workshop will empower participants with the basic skills and resources for effective grantwriting. This session with Chuk Kleber, experienced in both grant writing and funding, will span both afternoon sessions.

This workshop will be offered once and will span two sessions.

Introduction to Church Insurance

Presenter: Jeff Lyngaas, VP of Client Services for Church Insurance Agency

Jeff will provide an overview of Church Insurance for the congregation including reviewing the risks associated with various church ministries and discussing ways to reduce or eliminate risks for more effective and safe ministry in our communities.

So You’ve Been Elected to the Vestry…

Presenter: Mike Spencer, Canon to the Ordinary

Designed primarily for anyone who has not served on a vestry before and for those that need a refresher, this workshop will discuss the unique ministry of a vestry in the Episcopal Church. The presentation is built on four frameworks: leadership, governance, relationship, and role, and will look at best practices for “nuts and bolts” vestry processes.

Growing Young

Presenter: McKenzie Bade, Facilitator of Youth & Young Adult Networks

This workshop will focus on connecting with young people in your congregations. With inspiration and guidance from the book Growing Young by Kara Powell, we will learn tools to help congregational leadership create churches that engage the younger generation in a way that creates vitality, life and energy into the whole church.

Medical Trust & The Church Pension Group

Presenter: Representative from the Church Pension Group

A representative from CPG will review the services available as they pertain to eligibility and options for medical, life, and disability coverage. This presentation, along with time for questions and discussion, will aim to bring attendees up to speed about the Episcopal Church’s efforts to care for its ministers – both lay and ordained.

The Academy for Vocational Leadership

Presenter: The Rev. Dr. Valerie Fargo,
Director of the Coppage-Gordon School for Ministry

The Academy for Vocational Leadership is a local formation program for students discerning to become priests and deacons in the church. In this workshop, Val will talk through the curriculum, application process, and the impact local formation can have on the student and on the congregation.

All About Parochial Reports and Office Practices

Presenter: Katharine Rose, Financial Officer

Every year, the Episcopal Church asks every congregation to complete a Parochial Report. This data helps church leaders at all levels, but for congregational leaders, sometimes the report form is difficult to understand. In this workshop, you’ll learn about the report, why it’s necessary, how the data is used, and how the Manual for Business Methods can help ensure accuracy and usability – not only for the report but in daily office practices.

Digital Tools for Evangelism

This workshop will consider how churches might employ digital tools to tell the story of the Jesus Movement at work in our communities and in our churches. We’ll identify proven user-friendly and cost-effective tools that churches around the country use to tell their story.

Hiring and Taxes for Clergy & Lay Employees

It’s not often that churches will hire new clergy or lay employees. Molly and Katharine will help those responsible for this task understand what they need to know about the hiring process and how to get help and access resources.

The Diocesan Church Development Institute

Presenter: Mike Spencer, Canon to the Ordinary

DCDI is a two-year leadership training program focused on developing the spiritual, community, and organizational life of congregations. It engages participants in the issues and dynamics they face as leaders to create stronger, healthier, more spiritually rooted, and responsive congregations. This workshop will introduce you to the DCDI program and invite your congregation to consider participation in the next cycle.

Experiencing Prayer

Presenter: McKenzie Bade, Facilitator of Youth & Young Adult Networks

Take your prayer practice into your own hands. Participants will take part in hands-on prayer through several experiential prayer stations. McKenzie, the workshop facilitator, will provide resources and information for participants to duplicate these multi-generational practices in their home congregations.

Financial Statements 101

Financial Statements are how we represent the financial health of our congregation to our leadership. Learn how to manage your congregation’s financial statements from initial set up to reading and reporting.
